“The strongest tool in the world is no longer oil; it is technology ”, assured to Dinero the writer, lecturer and futurist, Gerd Leonhard, who recently participated in the Fourth Revolution Forum in the Digital Age organized by Tigo with the support of the ICT Ministry.
The expert, born in Bonn, Germany, stressed that political leadership will be essential to use technological tools effectively and generate controls that allow the benefit of the largest number of human beings in the world.
“One problem with technology is that it does not solve political, social or cultural issues. We have many technologies, but they do not prevent bad decisions, "added Leonhard on the importance of electing governments leaders capable of making the right decisions.
A recent survey by multinational Harvey Nash and the firm KPMG revealed that the coronavirus pandemic generated one of the largest investments in technology in history.
“The role of politicians is to create a balance between citizens and technology, science and industry. Governments have to facilitate this mutual benefit between both sectors ”, complemented the writer and speaker.
According to the results of the Harvey Nash and KPMG survey, during the first wave of the pandemic, companies spent an additional $15 billion a week on technology.
“It is an industry responsibility to create very powerful [technology] products, but also take care of the most vulnerable,” Leonhard said.
According to him, the fact that geopolitical power lies in technology represents positive opportunities for societies, but also great dangers if a balance is not found between the advantages it offers and the misuse that it may derive on citizens.
“The more technology we use and the more connected we are, the more risks of privacy, data manipulation and loneliness. But that's not the fault of technology, it's the fault of the way we use it. That is why we need a balance ”, he concluded.

For Leonhard the future can also be hopeful. “We still have all the cards in hand. It depends on our wisdom and the leaders we choose to make the decisions ”.
"In the next 10 years we are going to decide the future of our species," he concluded.
